Re: GT40 Australia #48

Small detail, had the NACA duct's "inlets" painted mat black
and filled in with silver mesh. They look quite authentic.
in the pics the flash has lightened off the black, but you get the idea.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Pete, now that is a really smart idea - well done !

I had been wondering whether to cut openings in the side ducts, and what on earth to do with the centre one - everything I thought of lead directly to paint problems, now it is all solved.

I hope you don't mind if I pinch your idea ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How are things going on the Rego front ?

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Actually it's a pretty popular idea up here with DRB's. Very effective as well.

I'm going one step further with mine...since it's being repainted, I have my only chance.

I've opened up all 3 ducts and getting fibreglass guy to continue them under the clip and then block them off. Paint them black and they will look authentic.

Plus it gives me the opportunity later to open the side ones up and use them as I can cut into them under the clip and it will all be out of site.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Pete. I'll throw some pics into my build thread when I get a chance to take the photos.

Thanks, Craig and Brian. Peter the vin number and engine number have been allocated. Brake performance test early this week. Then engineering docs go to QLD Transport for approval. This is where the delay can happen and hopefully
my newest best mate at QT can speed it up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Pete, if you have a VIN & engine number, the worst is over & you are on a roll !

The brake tests are a breeze - mine sailed thru with just standard old Vette brakes, so yours should be shoe-in (given the size of the brakes & the weight of the car, they should just tick the bloody box & not waste anybody's time)!

BUT, if the tester gets a bit serious, be prepared to lose about a third of the rubber from your front tyres during the tests !

Best of luck mate.

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

The noise and brake tests were conducted today. Brake test
comprises repeated stops from 100kph without locking a wheel. Average retardation was around 1G.
Drive by noise test is a 50kph drive past in second gear and accelerate away at the decibal meter. Then the same in fourth gear. Noise limit is a very tough 76DB.
WE PASSED. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.
Looks pretty in the cane field.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Hi Pete

Looking good there I see..... One thing though, can you tell me at what distance they place the meter from the road as you pass by? We get tested at Goodwood motor circuit both as a static test at 0.5M and a drive-by at 10M from track, so I wondered how the levels/silencing compared...

thanks.

Also - (edited) I have just noticed the 'Super-Traps' or similar over your exhaust exits... How many dB did they drop? what diameter? and how many plates fitted? + finally - did they stifle the engine much?

Sorry to bombard with questions but am interested in your 'measured' testing.

thanks again...

Pete,
Looks absolutely fantastic, can't wait to see it in the flesh when I hit Brisbane for a day in October /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Big Congratulations.

Brett, I hope it is through rego by then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Only joking /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I look forward to catching up.
Paul, we have 4 mufflers, 2 cats and two supertraps fitted.
I have no idea how much the Db dropped by because their was no "before reading". To my ear it went from a fantastic exciting symphony, to something vaguely like a fart in Church /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif. It certainly restricts the breathing but to what degree, once again, no idea, as it has not been near a Dyno yet. The drive by distance from the road to the measuring device was 7.5 meters.
Sorry I can't be more specific.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Blimey!!
Must be a 'soft fart' in a church as 76dB at 7.5 M would be well difficult to pass.

Goodwood driveby test is (or was?) 98dB at 10M on the driveby......

I presume that after all testing and certification is complete, you'll not be upset should the Super-Traps 'accidentally fall off'. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmmmm. I think I will plead the fifth amendment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
No thats not valid in OZ. It will remain perfectly legal at all times. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Actually it was a very soft fart. The ambient noise from a light breeze blowing through the cane fields was around 40Db. All romance is going out of life. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I reckon you could possibly have one of the quietest GT40's in Oz, maybe even the world. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Congrats on passing the tests...one more step closer... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Go Pete - now its just down to the bureaucrats - to pull a quote from one of my posts when I was not even yet at your stage :

"- Depression Management : a few times there, I got close to packing it all in (heat of the moment stuff). When I cooled off, I thought "screw this, I've got too much time & effort invested here to let some bureaucrat just take it away - I'll just wear them down. Whatever they want, I'll do, because at the end of the day, they'll run out of hurdles & then I'll have a GT40 on the road, and they won't" ! It took a while, but it came true !"

It sounds like you have a better class of bureaucrat up there in QLD, so things might just go faster than you expect ! After that, all you'll be able to complain about is having to fill up the '40 2 or 3 times a week at over $1.20/litre !

Re the noise : down here in Gestapo Bob's State, there is quite a body of anecdotal evidence to support the theory that the chances of getting booked for loud exhausts is directly proportional to the actual noise level, AND, inversly proportional to the perceived age of the driver !

IE : An old fart with grey hair & a 95dB exhaust stands about the same chance of being booked as a young hoon with no grey hair & a 70dB exhaust. Moral : don't let Di talk you into even thinking about "Grecian 2000" !!!

Good luck for the final stretch !

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Re: GT40 Australia #48

Thanks, Peter I am sure we will eventually get there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Funny thing about noise, one of my other passions(in addition to fast cars similar women and booze)is motor bikes. My theory is the louder they are, the safer they are. My current ride a Harley Duece, was so quiet when I picked it up from the dealer you could hardly hear it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
And little old ladies on the way to bowls, and Volvo "hat" drivers were on a vendetta to kill me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Now the mufflers on the bike are clearly stamped, NOT FOR ROAD USE.
and the aforesaid little old ladies and Volvo's show RESPECT and scuttle for cover. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Nothing like a loud exhaust to give inattentive drivers a reality check. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Interestingly I have not been pulled over for loud exhausts since I was about 19. So your theory about the Grecian 2000 might be spot on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
