RCR #010 Build Progress

Changed from Dymo Labels to This...

Remember this? Very few liked this...

So I had a company called Aircraft Engravers make a switch panel out of .020 Lexan with the white letters engraved.

Is this better?

I still need to have the other panel made, but have to wait for my AC and wiper parts so I can lay them out.

Those look great, and I don't think they lose the race look.

Making a center console

Many of the original GT40s had a center console which housed certain control switches. I decided to replicate that design to house my battery cutoff switch, line lock switch, and fire suppression switch (plus room for any future additions).

The console has the added benefit of being able to run the wires from the engine bay through the covered console and up to the fuse box and dash without having to cut holes in the front bulkhead.

I first made a mockup with some 1/8" thick masonite. The console is 6" tall by 2" wide, but my battery kill switch is 2-1/2" wide. To resolve this fitment issue, I am making the square section of the console wide enough to accomodate the switch and 8.250" tall.

The section going from the square console to the foot panel will be curved on the top like the originals.

The final product will be one piece with a removable top made from .080 aluminum.

Great work Bill looking good, may I ask why you're putting in a Line Lock? (assuming you mean a front brake only solenoid) .

Cheers,

Methinks Bill has some drag racing in mind. :)

I like the center console, Bill. Are you going to weld it in or are you going to use some sort of fasteners?

Center console

Thanks for the compliments guys. The Line Lock is plumbed to the rear so I can hold the car in neutral and work on it. And I may need it to pass CA brake and light inspection.

The final product will be painted with a two-part satin black polyurethane paint like the rest of the chassis. The curved addition from the square console to the front of the car will most likely be carpeted.

I was thinking of using 8-32 SSTL button head screws to attach all the additions to the existing tunnel, which is 1/4" thick aluminum.

I am also planning on fabricating sill panels to fit over the exiting sills to look like the orignals, complete with the ribs and fuel sponson access plate (fake though).

Cheers

The switch panel looks great Bill, that's exactly the look I want. Thanks for the info, your build progress and details to date have been excellent!

Bill,

I know all states are different, but typically an emergency brake has to be mechanical. It can not be electric or hydraulic or a combination of both. It's this way in Michigan anyway. The line lock is a neat idea for this, but probably not legal?
On a different note, I love your project it's been fun watching it progress!
Your doing a fantastic job. Both you and Ron will be hard acts to follow.

Keep up the great work.

Console is a great idea for some close reach switches. Also if using a switch to control fire supression they may not be a simple toggle, it may have a switch with a battery as well as special wire (either teflon or fibreglass insulated).

For the line lock as an ebrake just make sure that a mechanical lever is in the car for looks. I'll bet that they won't give it a second thought, or at least make the ratchet sound and quickly flip the switch!

Things are looking good!

With regard to the line lock switch and admittedly not being very technically minded in this area, I was wondering if there is a danger of flicking the toggle switch by mistake when driving? If so what would happen? Is the system inactive automatically once the car is in motion? Or could you use one of those 'Top Gun' toggle switches with the flip up covers?

Or am I talking nonsense?

Line lock will lock the pressure in the line. Great for stepping on brake, locking pressure, and proceeding with henious smokey burnout. Activating the line lock whilst rolling down the highway with no pressure in the lines won't cause you any problems.

I thought he was setup to go drag racing!

You guys are a riot. Yea, I can see me locking the front tires and smoking my 15" AVON's. I would probably smoke the clutch in the process.

Sandy-
I like your idea with the phony e-brake handle.

As for the correct switches, those you see in the picture are only for mockup purposes to check ergonomics and chassis fit. The Line Lock will have a red guard to prevent accidental turn-on. The fire suppression switch is a guarded push button switch that comes with the SPA electric system.

And NO CUPHOLDERS!!

How about a normal Emergency / hand / parking brake lever

They usually have a switch built in that activates a fluid level check light on the dash.

Pull the handbrake up and the light illuminates - release and it goes off Use the same circuit for the non return valve - you have a usable lever and built in brake switch. AND you have a light on the dash to tell you the brake is on!

Just a thought
