Old GT40 wanted

Dear Forum Friends,

I only recently joined and am amazed with the wealth of knowledge in here. Unbelievable. And since all of you are very well connected, I thought posting this might lead to something good.

I am looking for a quite specific GT40 in terms of age. The short story is, due to incredibly tough regulations in my country of residence, Switzerland, I only really have a chance of getting a foreign car road legal here if it is old. I mean, really quite old Ideally older than 1990. So if anyone I retiring from this wonderful hobby (or knowing someone) with an older GT40 I am interested.

Seller beware, talking to me will entail annoyingly detailed document analysis with my local DMV before being able to make any offer, so anyone with little patience you might want to consider this. It has to be properly registered in the name of the real manufacturer and real first year of registration, not the often used 1965/66 Ford papers.

On the bright side I am not fussy about colors or mileage, it should just be at a minimum a 302 and ideally RHD. Of course some goodies would make me happy, such as knock-off wheels, bundle of snakes or even a (well-running) ITB setup.

I’m curious to see what treasures are hiding in your garages and if one can find a new home at some point. I’m not in a hurry and will wait for the “right” car to come along. I look forward to hearing from you!

In the meantime, happy holidays and a healthy new year to everyone

All the best, Jochen

First thing to consider, GT40's don't come cheap, especially when they have road legal EU papers (which is the hardest part to get, nearly impossible now).

There's a GTD for sale 300km from Zurich. 01 1989 German registration.
Location DE-73441 Bopfingen.

Hi JP, I agree, but since I’m fine with RHD the UK market is much more attractively priced. The ones for sale at mobile.de are (in my humble opinion) quite illusionary prices. I saw the one you mention, but that is a price of a modern high end build in the US. I’m curious how long the seller will need to find a buyer at that level. Anyway, thank you very much for your suggestion, much appreciated. Happy holidays Jochen

Well I got offered €150.000 recently for my Rover 3.5 V8 powered KVA/GTD MK2 with 1981 road legal EU registration (Dutch), while mine isn't for sale at all and I am not interested in selling at all.
Supply and demand.
EU road legal GT40's are scarce. These days nearly impossible to get a UK one on EU papers since Brexit.
In your favour, Switzerland aint EU.

Wow, that is quite an offer! Yes, you are right, the Swiss don’t care about EU papers. They need old and original, so it appears as if the UK route is my best bet. I’m not in a hurry and I honestly I’m dreading the DMV discussions, but I’m hopefully as the GT40 is the prettiest car of them all. But I’m never going the route again of “made-up” content in the papers, that was nerve-wrecking with my Cobra. Learnt my lesson the hard way (fines, customs issues, etc.). But I assume it will take a while to find a car that will check al necessary boxes for this. And my budget.
Enjoy your car and its legal status And maybe we see each other one day at a meet, would be cool!

Bump. Still looking, by now most questions have been clarified and a properly registered UK car like a GTD from the mid-nineties will work for my purposes.

Hi Jochen

Would a South African registered car work for you?. Quite a few SA cars are going to the UK. This looks to be a nice one. Divide SA price by 20 to get to Euro (before shipping)

Hi Fred, thanks a million, much appreciated! I think if it is properly registered as a KCC a ZA car would work. The paperwork is crucial. The one you sent looks really quite nice but has the gearshifter in the middle, ie a full RHD setup. I have made my peace with RHD but am literally unable to rewire my old brain to shift with my left hand. Tried and failed :-) but I will keep looking in ZA as well, thank you so much!!!
