Need cooling help please

Lee, I will research this gasket issue more. I may need to dry fit this one first to see if my concern is valid.

Ron, I understand ... at any tight corners and where timing cover, block, and oil pan gasket meet. Thanks!

Now test fitting the gasket to the oil pan, all holes line up, but one thing has me scratching my head. The oil pan has a pronounced rib in the half moons, but the gasket is flat across that area...this reduces the contact surface on the bottom sides of the half moon....hmmm.

Does Roush publish a maintenance parts list for their crate motors? I haven't found one yet.
The rib in the pan is to apply pressure. That how the Factory Ford pans are. Your doing great!

Finally have some time to start putting it back together. I am reminded what a PITA it is with minimal space.

Cleaned all mating surfaces and installed a new seal on the timing cover, then timing cover loosely installed with new gasket, then installed balancer, and tightened timing cover and torqued it all.

Had a little extra time, so I installed the fuel pump too. Tomorrow I think it will be the oil pan, starter, and other bits removed in those areas. Lastly it will be the coolant pump, thermostat, and accessories. I still need to source some new rubber coolant hoses...

Rough day today to be honest...it took a few tries to get the oil pan on with help from my wife. Those engine mounts are just in the way.

The clip system that came with the Fel Pro gasket is good, in theory, unless you have to tilt the pan to get around the mounts, then the clips are in the way.

Got all the bolts in only to find out when I went back to torque them, that the ones along the sides are too long. They bottom out before snugging up. I now have to go buy shorter bolts or very thick washers to complete this install.

I won't get into all of the details, but a lot of tries that failed, recleaning surfaces, and trying again. About 5 brutal hours under the car today. Ugh.

Just cut the bolts to the length you need.

Duh, in my exhausted attempt to install the oil pan yesterday I neglected to remember that there are two thick metal reinforcement pieces that run the length of each side....thus taking up the slack of the side screws.

Ya know, sometimes it's best to stop and regroup rather than press on. Lesson learned.

I think I can replace them rather easily if I can clamp the pan at each end somehow....hmmm

Most of the rear coolant hoses in have been ordered (in black silicon). I will be trying the Gates heat shrink clamps where I can get to them! Thanks again.

imho I would use regular rubber rather than silicone for cooling system - silicone hoses have a permeation rate that is 20x regular (EPDM) rubber so over time you lose water in the system and you need to continually check coolant levels. If you don't mind constantly checking your coolant levels I guess they're okay, but I rather set it and forget it.

Alex, I do not know from where come the value of permeation you indicate, but my experience contredict it. I have silicone hose on my 427 big block since more than 10years, and I never add any water, except for a leak due to a bad metallic collar.

Mike, I have five Powerband clamps that are left over from my build. You can have them for $10.40 Flat Rate shipping.

Today was a much better day. With the car on the lift, I used a large square of soft wood with double cardboard topper against the bottom of the oil pan held against it with a 2x6 vertical sitting on a jack. This held the pan in it snugged up position while I undid one side of bolts, slipped the reinforcement metal plates in and then reinstalled and torqued the bolts. It took a while, but it worked.

I then torqued up all the motor mounts bolts, reinstalled the oil lines, and installed a new oil filter. Lastly I reinstalled the starter and the flywheel cover plate.

I am getting close to being done underneath the car...woot!
