Steering column position on Superlite GTR.

The steering column arrived after the car and as I mentioned in an earlier note I have to cut and mount. The issue I’m running into is steering rack location/position. If I mount higher up 4” below firewall weld the tie rods go through the upper opening(which I believe is correct) but the tie rods rest on the aluminum sides, bottom of cut out even if I mount to the upper side on the wheel versus bottom mount. If I go low and use the lower cutout, it will rub over a bump.
Any finished photos showing the mount location would be greatly appreciated. Also, any advice to make it easier would be great.
I have the car stripped down to the frame, so
I have room to work.
Thank You
Bill

Hi Bill,
I'm building a GT-R as well. Its certainly a challenge. :)

Take a look at the attached photos. I hope this helps. Keep in mind I also did the H craft mods which bring the wishbones out a bit to get rid of the fat wheel spacers. I hignly recommend this modification. Kurtiss Humphrey posted a PDF with directions on how it's done.

Cheers!

Thank You! Would you also have a photo of the rack mounted to the firewall? I’m trying to find a mounting place where it will connect to the steering column comfortably, but allows the tie rod ends to pass through without touching. I’ll definitely look into the modifications as I’m sure it can help! My wheels are close to the shocks and back wheels have touched the shocks. The gentleman I purchased the car kit from bought extra wide tires I believe 375’s on the rear.
Best of luck with your car!!

My car was one of the first Fran made. I think the steering rack is a bit different. If you need anything else I PMed my contact information to you.

Hurley,
These pictures are very helpful as that’s the location I anticipated. I just need to find a way to make an extra half inch of clearance for the tie rods. If I lowered the steering I don’t think it would align properly with the drive shaft. If I use the lower cutouts, I would block the gas tank access point!
I really appreciate all of your help!

Make sure the car is sitting at ride height when measuring. And, keep in mind if you do the H craft mod to the front splitter it will lower your ride height and raise the rack further over the aluminum panel. Good luck.
