SLC 24 Howard Jones

Wow Howard, fantastic solution. I've logged a few hours staring at my door bars and bodywork (they are the same as yours you may know) thinking of different solutions. Your idea trumps any I've had.

That said, when the time comes, I believe I'll be asking Fran to provide the newer door bars that don't require cutting out the doors interior panel.

Mesa has made me self conscious about not doing any bodywork so I went at it with a big ass hole saw and a sawzall.
Really, the fiberglass windshield was in the way. I am at the beginning of working out a dashboard. I have a good idea what I want to do. It will be much like several other race cars I have looked at. Just a flat sheet of aluminum with a flat panel with the gauges on it. I do however want to be able to easily remove the entire dash electronics package from the car for easy maintenance.

I will save the production dashboard so that if I ever convert the car for street use I can use it then. It's so nice I just couldn't hack it up to put it in my track car.

Howard...just a little FYI...the new race screens are now in stock.

Hardcoated inner and outer and race legal everywhere...made by DP/Nascar supplier.

The windscreen will be nearly the last thing to go onto the car. I do think it would be a good idea to use a lexan screen instead of that expensive glass one on track. Every time something comes up from somebody else's car when I run my GT40 it makes me wince. GT40 windshields are not something you run across every day.

Maybe when I get closer to running the car. Next fall?? we'll see. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you given any thought as to how you're going to run your throttle cable Howard? I've been thinking about mine and I see several ways, just not certain the best.

I don't think you ever told me what type of material it's made out of? Lexan MR10? Or something else? I must know so I know how much Alex-abuse it can take before I need to buy another one

Alex, I will run the cable down the center of the interior out thru the shifter cable hole and then back to the carb. Until I get a carb and start working out how to do it I don't have exact information. I did my GTD40 sort of this way except the cable went up the front of the engine and I used a bell crank to make the 180 degree change of direction back to the carb. I may do it this way again, I'll see when the time comes.

The lexan windshield material that Fran is talking about would be best explained by him. I don't know the specifics. I am aware that there are new, much better coatings avaliable today and windshield use is becoming much more viable.

When I ordered the car from Fran I left off the digital dash thingie. I know they are cool and all but I can't read them when I am trying to drive the car at anything quicker than cruisin down the highway speeds. Since this is going to be a track car then I want to be able to read the instruments.

Thus I intended to do my own dashboard. The fiberglass OEM one isn't big enough to mount the gauges I want so I made my own. The design objectives for my dashboard were, must be able to remove the panel face from the car and work on it on the workbench, do not cut up the OEM dash so that I can save it for another day should I want to convert to a streetcar, break even on weight and replace with a complete bolt in system.

I wanted to be ale to remove it from the car with the windshield in place but it can't be done and keep the top piece one piece. I could have used two halves but it would not be stiff enough with out getting far more complicated. This car may use a lexan windscreen in the end and if so I won't glue it on anyway. I will just hold in in place with tabs like most other race cars.

Here's what I did. The whole thing is just about the same weight as the fiberglass OEM part. The three mounting corners allow the roll cage tubes to be partially covered. The top flat piece is stiffened on the bottom with ribs. And the face of the gauge panel is big enough to fit everything I want on it neatly.

The last thing is, the entire center body secton will come off the car and all this stuff remains in place.

Looks awesome. I used to feel the same way about the Digidash but I'm glad I kept mine - it really grows on you in time.

Btw, what do you mean about tabs holding the lexan in place? This intrigues me greatly......

Here's an example. This arrangement alows for easy removal of the windshield.

Can someone tell me why this build log has been moved out of the build log section and into Fran's RCR section. I AM THE ONE BUILDING THIS CAR, not RCR.

Although mine hasn't moved yet, I suspect the moderators are trying to partition non-GT40 RCR builds out to the RCR section?

Would be my best guess as well...
After all - it is called "GT40 Build Logs"..

Not my doing though....

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............well I'm not pissed off or anything. I just wonder if someone searched "build logs" for my build log if they would find it. Maybe the solution would be to change GT40 build logs to GT40s buildlogs as in all buildlogs on the gt40s.com website. Or just buildlogs period. Seams kind if disjointed to have to look all over the website for different car types.

Whatever, we are lucky to have this website in the first place. Thanks again Ron!

Radiator fans mounted. The radiator didn't have any tabs welded onto it to mount the fans so I made my own mounting rack. Seven bolts and the whole fan rack comes off without disturbing the radiator. I started out trying not to weld on the radiator but in the end I did anyway. I'm still a little careful when welding on things that cost real money to repair or replace but it turned out fine.

Here's a few pictures.
