Don, I too like the # 1 car's stripes but this would leave you with a decision (I would presume) as to the border color to place on that stripe design. The #3 car does not appear to have a border color like the # 1 car.

Mike & Jimmy,

I would agree with you that the two wider stripes look better but it will not change my mind what I will have on my car. I committed a long time ago to make a copy of the number 3 car. I totally understand that not everyone would be doing what I have committed to with respect to color and/or the car I'm trying to copy. Lets face it to copy a car that DNF in the only race it entered is a stretch. But it's all about history and I'm a fan of the underdog and like the driver of the number 3 car.

Progress continues, black headlight buckets and trim around all the glass painted black.

One of the things I worked hard at was to cut the rear spare tire access door out so I could use the center section as the door. It turns out that after cutting the door out the piece of fiberglass wants to be anything but flat. Depending on the weather and room temperature this piece of fiberglass wants to be a pretzel not a flat door. So an aluminum door was made and no one knows the difference.

Still planning on picking her up this week after the graphics are painted.

They told me to come by a 4 PM yesterday to pick up the car. I asked for a picture before dragging the trailer 20 miles and was told they wanted me to see it in person. I now know why I consider myself a pessimist because my brain was telling me something is wrong if they will not send a picture. But I want to believe they want me blown away by a perfect car.

Well guess what, it’s not ready. I took pictures which from 20 feet away it looks good however there is one place on the roof of the car which requires a redo, need to paint the gas filler cover and front covers for the air intakes. Two small pin holes that need filled and repainted and STRIPES.

Get this, the first words out of my mouth was where are the stripes? Answer, “We don’t want to take responsibility for painting the stripes.” My reply, why is this the first time you are telling me you can’t do stripes? With that there was silence. Understandable I’m mad but I have learned not to get mad because it clouds your thinking and this is business so what is fair. My thoughts are to get a different painter involved and get a price to have him add the graphics and subtract the price from the body shops agreed upon price. . I gave them the graphic templets from Raceline Digital, both sets of paint masks when I dropped the car off and not a word. Why is it so hard to get a car painted the way you want it? I’m not looking for an answer, I know I just have not found the right body shop yet.

It’s looks great and they have done a great job with the gaps, panel fit and the paint which I told them so but I wish they had been honest about their ability to paint the graphics.

Enjoy the pictures, it’s a great looking car without the graphics.

Geesh how many months did they take? They don't want to take the responsibility? Maybe you're better off getting somebody else to do it. Certainly not a confidence instilling statement. Has it been buffed & polished? Maybe it's just the picture angles but it looks "satin" & not shiny.

In my experience - Painted Stripes need to be done almost immediately after the color is done or you have to wait through a rather lengthy curing and outgassing process. If you don't do it right away or wait for the curing to be complete, you could easily end up with a reaction between the paints.
The other option would be mylar stripes. Very thin and almost undetectable as tape..
The car does look beautiful in the pics and I hope the shop does right by you.

Mike, its clear coated, buffed & polished which makes it very shiny if you get close. Very interesting 1966 Ford color that seems to change dependent on lighting. I like it!

John, thanks for the compliment, it will be a looker when completed with graphics.

Kirby, don’t feel bad about your recommendation. I interviewed them and checked out their work before committing to have them do the car. Everything was looking good up to last Thursday when they let me know the painter did not feel up to doing the graphics. It really comes down to the painter they have presently which may have been a different guy when they took on the project. Painters are kind of like Gypsies who move around a lot. I am not sure what the hell is wrong with body guys and painters but they are ostensibly worthless. They are lazy, can't hit their dates and their work sucks, across the board. I think the insurance repairs on late model cars has diluted their willingness and ability to do real craftsmanship.

Randy, you are correct that it needs to be done quickly after the base paint but more importantly the paint product must be compatible which is part of my frustration because I run the risk of having two painters saying it’s the other guys fault when there is an issue. The Mylar or vinyl is an option which I have seen people clear coat over and it looks the same as painted graphics to my eyes. It is something I’m checking out at this point. I had always thought a clear bra over part of the car was a plan for protection. If a clear bra was in the cards why not vinyl graphics? It’s just not what I wanted but sometimes you must be flexible or go crazy and be mad at the world.

This is just a bump in the road and the car will get completed and will look like my vision for the car in the end. Thanks everyone for your compliments and advise.

In talking to the guys at Coast Air Brush (my paint suppliers) the new urethane aren't nearly as touchy about over coating. Re-coating with like stripes or touch up. But the multiple painters pointing fingers at the other guy certainly can be a situation. These wraps & over lays they have now are fantastic. I don't have any idea of cost but can be an out. Particularly if you might want to change the color scheme in the future.

I'm with Jack and you. Stick with your plan to replicate the car with the stripes painted. It is stunning and may be the only replica of that No. 3 car.

Mike S. at this point Vinyl is my last choice, I really wanted painted graphic and should be able to get there. Its only time and money, right.

Jack I'm with you. In five years the vinyl will not look the same as painted stripes.

They tell me the car is once again ready to pick up tomorrow. Will see if the base coat paint is ready this time. Will let you know.

Ann, my wife, has always called this car Missy short for my Mistress so I showed these pictures to her and her comment was it looked like a woman getting her hair colored.

I laughed out loud in a meeting I was in yesterday.

Glad she has a since of humor while letting me build this car.
