With great apprehension I began working on the spare tire access door. Cutting such a big hole in the rear clam gave me quite a bit of anxiety. Anyone that has seen pictures in my past posts has seen this access door marked out for maybe a year. I’ll be honest I have been procrastinating for quite a while.

This section of the car is such a large flat section I worried about keeping the panel structurally sound once this section was cut and the door made. To me this door was a detail that I did not want to leave out of my replica even though I have no plans to carry a spare tire. That may change but for now no tire.

Once the fiberglass was cut I fit 1” wide by ¼” deep chemical resistant PVC strips to the underside of the body to form the door ledge leaving about a ½” for the door to rest on. With help from clecos I held the strips in place and the cutout door section flat with the body with an even spacing all around. Flipping the rear clam I than fiber glassed the strips to the underside of the body. I’m sure everyone knows the trick of placing clear packing tape on any surface you don’t want fiberglass to stick to which is what I did to the door section. I also used molding clay to fill in the door edge so fiberglass resin did not drip through the cracks.

After letting it set up for an hour I removed the clecos and simply popped the door out, trimmed the edge, mounted the hinges and hood pin latch. It looks like the original and good to me.

Now that it’s done I don’t know what I was apprehensive about.

Thanks, With hard work last Saturday I finished the last of glassing in all the fender wells and have pronounced the car ready for the body/paint shop. Will plan a day this week to get the car to the painter. If possible I will post pictures of the process.

Car has been at the body shop for a while and is progressing. They set it out in the sun for a few days and hopefully found all the air bubbles. Body prep goes forward.
I have learned that the natural progression is to move from making sheet metal parts to CNC parts, well it was with me. Two things I used my 3D cad program for was to make the rear sway bar supports and a steering wheel center cap. Both are back from the machine shop and look great to me.
It's hard waiting for the car to return so all the new parts can be installed. I still think of things I can make while waiting. I'm hoping to have the car back in my garage by Christmas.

Thanks John and Jason. It was fun researching the dimensions and designing parts in a 3D modeling software that could directly to the CNC machine. I'm sure these will not be the last parts for the GT.

I'm liking what they are doing and was impressed they found a way to fix the doors. It seems the doors and rear clam never did match up around the oil cooling air intakes. I was worried that the molds had warped but after looking at the J8 car it appears it was the original molds, see attached picture.

The door gaps are looking good to me because of what they started with.

Took some pictures with by phone, see attached. Don't think it will be this year I get the car back but it should be soon.

A small project was to find a way to change the way I had mounted the remote oil filter. Originally I had mounted it to the two support rods on one side of the rear clam support frame. Although it works I just didn’t like the look of it. The transaxle has nice mounting holes tapped ready for use so I took some aluminum plate and made a bracket. Changed manufacturers for the remote oil filter mount and got it piped up. Once that was there I thought I would continue with mounting a remote oil catch can, it is an old Ford FE by the way and it will have some blow by that is better to hold in the catch can than drip from every gasket on the engine.

I attached pictures of the old mounting and the new one. I really like the way it looks now.

One other thing added is I had the pipes ceramic coated in I hope of keeping some of the heat down below the rear clam.
