Tornado Build - www.gt40builder.com

Trev, I went with a satin black that has a bit of texture to it. I used the same on my Daytona Coupe and it has worn very well. Cleans with soap and water..

Hey Bill

Yeah I want satin black too so am taking a component from the car that was previously coated by Tornado in satin black to see if they can match the finish.

Talking of powdercoating I am trying to establish what a good powdercoaters should do in terms of prepping and coating the panels. See thread here.

Early Xmas present!

Hi all

I had the best christmas present a day early today. My panels came back from the powder coaters and I was blown away with the quality of the work they have done. Every panel has a perfect finish with no patches or rough spots etc. I spent this afternoon unwrapping the panels and fitting them to the chassis.

I am VERY happy with the results.

Happy Christmas all

Hi all

I've got 3 panels that since being powder coated are slightly too big now (by approx 1-2mm max). I need to trim these slightly to get them fitting properly again.

I was planning on trimming them with my jig saw and then touching the edges up with some satin black paint. Do you think this is the best way of trimming these panels?

Thanks

Trev

Trevor,
I used a orbital sander to shrink some of mine after powder coating, it worked well and left a good clean edge. The panels look good,I'm happy with mine as I'm sure you are with yours. If you use a air powered rivet gun be careful, don't let the noes of the gun slip after setting the rivet, you won't like what happens.
Keep trucking, Bill

Thanks Bill

I am going to stick to the hand rivet tool I think. Takes more effort but I trust myself more with it than air tools.

I'll let you know how I get on shrinking some of the panels

Trev,
An electric rivet gun is a terific tool
ACCUBIRD - Battery Powered Riveting Tool - Li-Ion
They are effortless, recoil less and can be bought on ebay s/h (then sold on for the same money after the build)
I wouldn't even attempt panelling a chassis without one!

Simon

Looked at these before but unless I find a cheap one on ebay it's not worth it. £500 is very expensive for a rivet gun. I know you can probably sell them after use on a build but as with most tools they always come in handy so I'd probably never end up selling it.

Trevor,
I know you have an aversion to air driven rivet guns. I would suggest that you go by Harbor Freight and take a look at their prices. I think you will find it within reason. You definitely can recoup your expense easily enough with one of theirs. You might get one and try it out on some scrap stuff and if you don't like it, return it. They will take it back without question. If you hold it up to the metal(it ususally takes two pulls to snap the puller off) but don't press it down toward the metal, you won't get a bounce with it when it snaps it off.
I have one and it works like a charm after 7 years. The only problem I have had is the plexiglass catch chamber snapped off when I dropped it.

I would highly buying / borrowing a pneumatic riveter, especially for when fitting the floor. There's a lot of rivets and you need to pull them down reasonably quickly, as the sealant skins over quickly and won't spread as well. Have a look at what MachineMart sell. I used one of these, and it made a big difference.

Andy

Trevor, I'll second what Andy said. With large panels like the floor or for that matter any of them time is important. The quicker you can set the rivets the better. The tool I bought was not a lot of $ and well worth the investment. With what you've already bought and done it would be well worth the money spent.

Hi Trevor,
Any chance you could tell us where you got your panels coated, and a phone number? Looking at getting some done myself, and your not too far from me.

Certainly can. The company is Rugby Powder Coating Ltd . They are based in Rugby, Warwickshire (10 mins from the M6) and telephone number is 01788 572134.

I've been asked to write a article on my experiences with powder coating the panels, the company I used and the processes etc in one of the upcoming issues of fortification magazine also, so keep your eyes peeled for a full report
