Finally this sunday I was able to meet in person Alex Spagna, the owner of this wonderful superformance mk2 racing in the historic classic.
The guy is very kindly, and started to talk to me when I was the only one telling him "hey, wonderful superformance! congratulation!".Very few people here knows the existance of such wonderful replicas, italians are mostly closed to german and italian cars (mostly porsche and bmw,as well as the reds, for who can afford it) or some second hand pure american or british racers.
The Compuware-bad boy Corvette c6r is now here racing and winning all, as for tradition of that mighty 'vette.
Alex told me he asked the mk2 directly to factory with race spec (I didnt know spf dont sell kits and spare parts also for others of their continuations, they wanna u to proove u own the car),even if it is clear the origin of spf masterpiece is not at all the race track.
Alex had several problems in these years to keep the car running well for endurance racings (this time was a 2 hours endurcance classic,he got the pole position but cant race again for engine problems). His car has the 427 7.0 liter engine, and features weber's ida 48.
When I talked to him, it was obvious for me to ask why he didnt choose something (IMHO) much more racing, as for example fran's RCR ones or british ex racers.Seems down here fia approves only cars with monocoque (alex dunno also rcr are all monos)and spaceframes chassis are not allowed to race.
Being a 427 car, the gearbox is a problem. He knows the T44, but weight and price makes it very very hard to be part of his car.All this spf mk2 was build in america (he told me this, even if i knew spf are build in south africa). Also about the color he said he wanna keep it "original" as spf continuation are considered (seems the chassis starting with 2 have a sort of palmares too),cause THAT mk2 replica for too many (me included) would be mostly black and white stripes...
I remain of my opinion. This car is simply awesome, but for pure racing I think it will be better and surely cheaper to start from RCR mono, cause spf are much more "wonderful street" racers (tha gauges are incredibly nice).
Think guys in Michigan can satisfy a full budget request of a pure racer with setup, engine and trans factory build (and also the choosing of a 7.0 liters 427 isnt for me the best one for racing.Does it have SO many more usable hp than a well done 351w?.Dunno if spf can make the same (maybe yes, and I am worng), but being the monocoque the only problem for the racing omologation here the choosing will be restricted only to these 2 manifacturers, excluding nearly all the hill climb british racers I like so much.
Wonderful car, and very kindly guy.the weekend of racing was very cool.
