Newbie looking for an estimate

Hi there, I am hoping someone here can help me. I am looking to purchase my uncle's GT40 build project, but neither he nor I know what the car is actually worth. I watched as my dad and uncle worked together on the vehicle 20-30 years ago. I would estimate the build is 85-90% complete, but has been standing untouched for probably 20 years. He has decided it is time for the car to go to a new home, and I would like to complete the dream!

As far as I know, it has a small block ford, cortina front end, Audi rear. It is currently in south africa.

Would someone here be able to assist me with what a respectable offer would be for the car? I want to offer what it is worth.

Thanks in advance, and let me know if any information is needed.

Welcome to GT40's Peter. I think a lot more pictures are needed before anyone could help with a estimate. But from what I can see, it certainly would be a nice project to start with. Something to consider is if it could be registered where you live also. Any chassis pictures, transaxle pictures , chassis ID plates. The more you can show, the better the advise.

Regards Brian

Brian is absolutely correct that without more pictures of everything we can’t see, plus more critical information, it’s impossible to provide a good estimate of value. Based purely on your brief description and the provided photos, I don’t think I’d offer more than $10-15K USD.

If I was in a similar situation I would start with what your relative has into the car? If he totaled up their costs to buy them back then, what would that total be. Then try and determine what would the major components in similar conditions cost to buy today ((engine, gearbox, wheels and tires, power train auxiliaries, etc. and add that to his original cost for the kit. This would be a sort of baseline value of the kit and the parts. IMHO these cars are a sort of total of the parts when it comes to value.

I can let you know a KCC kit in the late 1980’s was Rand25000. Yes twenty five thousand.

To that add the price of an engine and box and a load or manual labour.

Used to advertise them in the South African Car magazine and I so wanted one…. But lived in Zimbabwe then and could not get the foreign cash together to import.

And with the inflation in SA paying what he has in the car would be a real steel

Yep, I remember those ads! Always thought i'd get GT40 while i was young and fit and look at a Cobra, when old and grey. Now im old and grey and still aiming for the GT40!
He paid R15000 for it partially built (with all the parts), it was a real steal, even back then!
