"GT40" crate engine

\"GT40\" crate engine

Further to my earlier post about the engine number, I cannot find where the engine block number is on my Ford supplied "GT40" crate engine.
I have looked just above the starter were the number was on my last engine, but there's nothing there.
Did they change the position for later blocks?
I have searched but could find nothing relevant.

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

John. Have a look at the top of the block at the rear. Hard up to the inlet manifold, on the flat area. Regards

Looked there, scraped the paint off even, still nothing

Hard to believe, but Mustang engines as late as '95 didn't have any engine number stamped into the block - just a sticker on a rocker cover ! So its no great surprise that crate engines are similar - all you need is a set of alpha-numeric punches & a big hammer !

Kind Regards,

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

There was no engine number on my crate engine either. Had to stamp it myself based on a number allocated by my engineer.

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

Cobra John, before Howard, Farhad, Scott and I all have heart attacks, let's clarify what number you're looking for.

Do you mean the "casting numbers" that are actuall cast into the block that denote the year of mfg of the block itself, they are usually located down by the freeze plugs.
Or are you talking about a serial number for the block (only some blocks had these, and they were up either by the distributor or the exposed part of the deck under the heads.

Which one?

If it's the casting #, I think that the BAR in California will know that it's NOT an older motor if it's missing!

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

Why would someone in the UK care what the California BAR thinks of his engine block? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hmm, all the Mustang engines I have seen have had stamped serial numbers where Norman mentioned on top of block behind inlet manifold. It's stamped really, really lightly and each digit is in a different font...which only factory would do. And they are really hard to find or read, even with paint removed. These are Mustang engines from the early 90's. These faint hard to read serial numbers have caused me no end of grief...even on my GT40. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

Steve, It's not for the guys in Australia - it's for the 4 amigos in Calif that would love to be able to sneak a 302 past the bar claiming it's really really a 1965 289, you just can see any numbers - honest mr BAR referee, we would not lie !!

Sorry Steve it was a small side joke from another thread.

Re: \"GT40\" crate engine

Spoke to Robert Logan at RF about my engine number and they are put on by RF for registration purposes as the Ford supplied GT40 crate motors are actually replacement motors and are not numbered. Sorry about the confusion but it answers a few questions. Regards

Re: "GT40" crate engine

Hi all

I have just purchased a GT40 replica. Engine # on rego papers is DH101445 - fuel injected jobby with HO on the alloy injection / intake manifold. I am assuming this is approx 95 HO engine. My numbers dont seem to match up to engine numbers / code descriptions i have found on this site.

Comments please.

Re: "GT40" crate engine

Hi All

When I purchased my new 5.4 Boss from Ford it came without a serial number stamped on the block as apparently it is part of the VIN number in Australia.

I had to have the RTA issue an engine number as well as the VIN number for my 40 for registration.

They needed to have a copy of the receipt from Ford before they would issue the engine number.
