P1046 front of door strip?

Notice there is a rivet attached, maybe one inch wide strip running vertically on the front of the doors. Hard to see as it is painted but suppose it’s an aluminum back up support for…, a water defector, any idea as to its function? Have seen on a few other period cars also.

If the door was thin skin aluminium the riveted strip might be a doubler plate to stiffen the door hinge area. ?
