Audi 2.7TDI transaxle

That 01E is a good find but keep in mind they suffer from pinion bearing problems, similar to the Porsche 968 gearbox. We have to replace about 80 percent of the pinion bearings in the 01E transmissions we overhaul. In fact of the few dozen I sold last year not one was in usable condition when we received it from our European suppliers.

At the risk of being banned on my first post, we use the 01X gearbox in a Lotus Esprit conversion we do where we fit the GM LS3 engine. We developed a new gearbox mounted starter motor which allowed us to use an 8mm thick adaptor plate, space is pretty tight in an Esprit. We use the GVD ratio set, which has a slightly longer 6th gear, but the GVC is the closest ratio set.
If you would like any more info please let me know.

Has anyone fitted a limited slip unit into the 01X

No body makes an LSD for the 01X.

I've put a 944 LSD in an 016....not sure how different that might be. It wasn't difficult except for having to set the lateral clearance once new output bearing were installed. That took some work!

Who sells plate type lsd`s for 01E?

An 016 diff can be made to fit but requires a bit of modification to the diff and the transmission.

Wave trac makes a Torque biasing differential that is a direct fit.

CAnt the same be done for the 01X?

01X diffs are not offered by anyone that I know of. The 016 diff won't work, it doesn't share any critical dimensions with the 01X.

I have gathered some more information here.

The 2WD 01E gearbox codes with the tall Diesel ratios are (as was posted here before):

01E DQS (01-02)
01E ELQ (01-02)
01E FRF (02)
Gearbox ratios (DQS/ELQ/FRF all the same)
Final 31:8 = 3.875
1st: 28:8 = 3.5
2nd: 34:18 = 1.889
3rd: 32:26 = 1.231
4th: 27:31 = 0.871
5th: 26:39 = 0.667
6th: 23:41 = 0.561
Rev: 38:11 = 3.455

These have the cast iron center housing:

The successor to this gearbox is the 0A2. The gearbox codes for 2WD are:

0A2 FZJ (04-04)
0A2 HMC (04-05)
0A2 HSU (05-06)
0A2 HVD (04-09)
0A2 JMC (06-08)
0A2 JME (08)

Gear ratios: roughly similar to 1E0, for some reason there were 3x versions. HMC and JMC have the tallest gear ratio (lowest cruising RPM).

This gearbox is completely cast aluminium (no cast steel center piece). The internals are the same as the G86.20 and G87.21 but with taller ratios.

The Porsche G87.21 (Boxster S / Cayman S) gearbox is the same version but with a close ratio and are cable shifted. What I have not been able to figure out is whether or not the cable shift mechanism can be adopted to the 0A2 gearbox. The shift mechanism inside the gearbox is the same.

The earlier G86.20 of the Boxter S was a different gearbox, it does not seem to be related to the 01E or the 0A2 at first sight. This gearbox is similar than the G96 internally but the diff is swapped around to reverse the rotation direction.

Best seen if you compare shift levers (G86.20 upper picture, G96 lower picture).

These gearboxes are all very similar internally as far as I understand and made by Getrag and later VW.

Also an overview of these gearboxes, L140, 1E0 and A02 and G86.20 and cruising speeds.

Thereafter, the largest Diesel engines (3L) got the 0B1 transmissions. They located the differential housing further to the front. Likely many internal parts still the same. Probably a good option when space is limited. I believe they made these until 2014.
