Inner wheel-arch protection.

I want to apply some protection to the inner wheel-arches of the front and rear clips.

I've just been using Thompsons Water seal to my garage roof, and it looks to be ideal.

The only problem I can see is that it is bitumen based. Will this bleed through into the fibreglass?

A number of advertised protection products specifically say "Not bitumen based".

Anybody got any ideas?

Hi Geoff,

Are you looking for water protection or for protection from stone chips etc?

For stone chip protection, what i've taken to doing is laying core matt into the fibreglass so provide a cushion from stones being flicked up and star cracking the fibreglass layup.

You can retrofit this as well to your panels. Would just require you to remove the panel, lay the core matt over the area you want to protect and then layup a thin fibreglass layer over the top, overlapping onto the panel.

I can probably sort you out a kit of materials to do the job.

+1 on the coremat. It is available in several thickness. Suggest minimum 2mm.
This is probably the best solution that I have ever used...

why not use underbody Schultz?

For belts and suspenders, use both. Underbody coatings to cover the installed coremat.

Hi All

On the inside of my clips I have used the foam concrete expansion joint material which comes in rolls with widths ranging from 80mm to 150mm.

I glued this into the inside of the front and rear clips and then painted this over with bitumen based black paint.

This protects the fibreglass from stone chips as well as providing a very effective sound deadening.

Works for me.

It looks like a closed cell neoprene but it does not have a brand name on it.

I will try and find out further details for you and post.

Our local hardware chain sells it in rolls of about 10 metres.

I glued 3/16" thick cork and coated it with underseal. I just replaced it in one rear fender after 20 years. That 20years included a fair amount of track time with sticky Hoosiers.

Thanks everyone for your ideas.

I wandered into Homebase (A DIY store in the UK), in the offchance of finding something suitable.
They are having a sale, and I've bought 4 camping mats (For sleeping on) for £2.99 ea.
They're med density closed cell foam, 6mm thick. Not affected by Evostik or bitumen paint. They're even Gulf blue!!

I'll keep you posted.
