Wheelchair Electric Bike.

I know this is a car building forum, but since a lot of pro builders read this stuff, I thought I’d share a recent build project I did in case anyone else would like to replicate it in whole or in part.

My girlfriend is in a wheelchair and hadn’t gone on a bike ride in years. I found an interesting idea on the ole internet and modified some of the components and built an electric wheelchair bike out of two electric bikes. It was a success and it works great. Both bikes are still independent with separate throttles. She can typically cruise around on the power of one bike, but if there’s a very steep hill, both bikes can be turned on for extra power.

I also added dual brake levers to each side, so she has disc brakes to all four wheels for extra stopping power.

I used two Aventon Sinch 2 E bikes with 20” tires. They’re folding bikes, so with a wrench I can disconnect the steering linkage and open it up for easier transfers, but she figured out how to transfer over without needing to do that. Still, it’s an option if needed.

I used some scrap steel from a broken elliptical machine that my neighbor was throwing away, which presented a nice solution for the footrest.

Later modifications included a longer back deck with an old milk crate for storage and a tow hitch setup so she could bring her manual wheelchair along for bathroom breaks or side excursions, etc.

So if any of you has someone in their life who’s wheelchair bound or has trouble safely operating a two wheel bike, feel free to use this idea and improve upon it.

I second everything Randy said. I was in a wheelchair for about 9 months back in the 70’s. I was lucky enough to be able to get out. I commend you for doing this for her. It has to be a great feeling for her to get out like that.
And this is exactly what this section is for. Thinking outside of the box !! Thank You for sharing.
Congrats!!!!’
Regards Brian
