Safir starter clearance to frame? Starter hole cover plate from RCR.

I’ve tried searching forum but cant seem to find an answer. I’m looking to see if anyone had to cut into frame on the RCR gt40 with SBF and Safir bell housing/starter combo? I’m installing the drivetrain by myself with hoist and would really like to drop it in. I bought a floor model gt40 and it has the hole cut out for starter clearance but I didnt get the old starter cover plate they used to offer. I wanted to see if anyone installed a SBF with Safir bellhousing and starter to see if it clears the frame rail? If it does I can just weld a plate and cover that hole before hoisting everything in. The starter looks well tucked in but hard to tell. Maybe someone has that starter cover plate lying around that they didn’t use???

Check with Randy's Build. He has the same bell and starter. I believe your Tilton starter can also be indexed about the nose of the unit if necessary. Not sure why someone would have cut a giant hole in the sponson?

When I picked it up I assumed it was done for the starter clearance liked in the manual. I’d like to weld in some 1/4” aluminum plate in there if it doesn’t touch and I don’t need the clearance.

it looks to me like that's the bellhousing hitting the tub, not the starter.
In the manual yes it’s just the bell housing that touches the frame but they call it the starter clearance hole. I’m not sure what size block they had mocked up in it that they needed to cut the hole but it got cut bigger to fit the clearance plate they used to sell with the kit. Unfortunately I didn’t get that plate and was hoping someone had one lying around that they didn't use.

Pat,
I have an RCR40, sbf with the Safir sbf clutch package. There was no need to cut any holes in the chassis for this installation. However, I did have to modify my oil pan for clearance to the starter. And I also cut the ears off the bottom of the bellhousing because it was perilously close to the lower x-mbr. Depending on the fore/aft location of your engine, you might not need to do that.

Thanks for the reply Rod! Now I can move forward and weld up that hole. I also had to ‘modify’ my oil pan for the starter. Unfortunately I found other posts on here showing that I could have gotten an oil pan with the notch in it already. Will see if the ears survive when I drop the driveline in.
