Renault Gearboxes

I have become a bit confused about the various sub-species of Renault gearboxes that abound.
There were the Renault 21 turbo, Renault 25 turbo and Renault 30, which presumably used variants of the box such as the UN1-08 and UN1-013.
But which car used which box - and then what ratios and final drive were fitted? Confusing?!!
Wouldn't it be nice if SOMEONE WHO KNEW brought all this information together into a table, showing which cars were fitted with which box and their gear and final drive ratios. . . . .
If only Chris Cole had e-mail!
BTW, thanks to Chris Parker for publishing the info about the UN1-013 identification tag on the recent fifth gear thread.

Hope this is of some use, dosn't come out very clear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif if you mail me I will send it in Word format.

The Renault 21 Turbo is the preferred transaxle although the GTA boxes are OK (if you can find one) but it either has to be inverted or the differential reversed unless you want five reverse gears /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The markings on my gbox puzzle me because they do not match any of the above. However working back to the ratios from the speedo tacho wheel size, they look very much like the 21 turbo ratios with the 3.44 diff.
when I checked, my tacho / speedo relationship was as follows;(with 255/60 VR15 tyres)

1st 6.67mph/100rpm (40mph@6000rpm)
2nd 10.81mph/100rpm (65mph@6000rpm)
3rd 16mph/100rpm (96mph@6000rpm)
4th 21.05mph/100rpm (126mph@6000rpm)
5th 26.67mph/100rpm (160mph@6000rpm)

The markings are;
On the gearbox casting, 'FD7', 'N' (in a circle), '88' (surrounded by radial lines)
on aluminium tag x UN 1605
100

I laso have a receipt with Renault part number 7701351364
regards
Dave

It MAY be an Alpine -05 box, check with the identification part of the manual ( see other post)

Thanks Dave, I saw the manual after I posted, saw the sketch and explanation of the aluminium id tag. I did not see an explanation for 'suffix' that appears in the table further on, but the manual seems to indicate that it is
A type UN1
B reference 605 (maybe 05 is the suffix mentioned in the gear ratio table)
C serial number 100
D made at factory 'x'
This makes it a D500 Alpine V6 GT which does match the gear ratios I thought I had.
Thanks for posting that manual, it also shows the difference between the old and later types.

Regards
Dave

I have a renault UN1-013 anybody know what sort of top end speed can I expect out of it @ 6000 rpm ? It has the standard gearset.
I know that my wheel diameters affect this but I'm just after a ballpark type figure I'm guessing around 160 mph.

Paul,

Try the Quaife gear calculator here.

At the homepage click on downloads and pick the "Qspeedcalc". Have fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BTW, turn that girl around /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Tim - unfortunately I'm on a macintosh so cannot use these calculators, unless there is one you can use online.

Paul,
The following is my Uni1 on the Quaife Calc. At the bottom I have listed my gears. If yours differ then list them and I will run the calc for you. Need tire diameter or circumferance and what rpm you want the results at.

Gearbox:- Renault - Uni1
Tyre: Circumferance 2,26.82 mm (24.4" dia)
Gears: 1st: 3.36, 2nd: 2.05, 3rd: 1.38, 4th: 1.21, 5th: 0.76
Ring & Pinion: 3.54
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 28.075 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 182.490 MPH at 6500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1069 RPM 40 MPH = 1425 RPM 50 MPH = 1781 RPM 60 MPH = 2137 RPM
70 MPH = 2493 RPM 80 MPH = 2849 RPM 90 MPH = 3206 RPM 100 MPH = 3562 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 41.277 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 3966 RPM dropping 2534 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 67.655 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 4376 RPM dropping 2124 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 100.502 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5699 RPM dropping 801 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 114.622 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 4083 RPM dropping 2417 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 182.490 MPH

Hope it helps. Don't forget to turn the girl /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Tim,
It would be great if you could run some figures for me : -
The Gearbox is the standard UN1-013 the ratios are : -
3.36 2.05 1.38 1.03 0.82 3.54 Diff 3.44

My rear tyres may be 245/40-17" on 9 inch wide rims, no idea on diameter or circumferance.
If you could do the rpm's for 6000.
Thanks,

Paul,

I used 3.44 Ring and Pinion (Diff). I wasn't quite sure what the 3.54 figure you listed was. Also, I used 26" dia wheel, should be pretty close.

Top Gear gives 27.412 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 178.177 MPH at 6500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1094 RPM 40 MPH = 1459 RPM 50 MPH = 1824 RPM 60 MPH = 2189 RPM
70 MPH = 2554 RPM 80 MPH = 2918 RPM 90 MPH = 3283 RPM 100 MPH = 3648 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 43.484 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 3966 RPM dropping 2534 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 71.271 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 4376 RPM dropping 2124 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 105.873 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 4851 RPM dropping 1649 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 141.850 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 5175 RPM dropping 1325 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 178.177 MPH

Thanks Tim just what I needed, I was wondering wether to go for the tall 5th gear or not from a V6 - How do you find the motorway driving ?

With my 302 I am real happy with the gearing. Motorway I can cruise all day in 4th up to about 75 mph well under 4,000 rpm or take it real easy and shift into 5th at 70+ mph and cruise at 2800 rpm but I have to go back to 4th to accelerate from that speed.

To your question, I really like my gearing. I'm having a G50 trans rebuild right now and I hope I like it as much as the Renault.

Hi Paul

I to use a Macintosh and have a 21T. Try using the attached .MS Excel file that works out top speed etc. I have already included the ratio's for the UN1 21T

Cheers

John
