Finally all set for the event (Flights, Hotel, Event) - staying from 24th through 30th in Pittsburgh..... looking forward to meet some of you guys.....

Now to plan the remainder of the trip... my son (19 yrs) is joining...

Current rough idea:
  • Arrival into Detroit on 23rd
  • Stay one night in Monroe
  • Drive to Pittsburgh (6 nights)
    - visit Flight 93 Memorial
    - see the city
    - GT40 Reunion
    - what else?
  • Drive to Indianapolis
    - what to see between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis?
  • Indianapolis (2 nights)
    - see the Speedway - seems the museum is currently closed for renovations?
    - what else to see
  • Drive to Chicago (2 nights?)
    - I guess plenty to see there
  • Drive to Detroit
    - Visit Gilmore car museum
  • Detroit (3 nights)
    - Visit Henry Ford Museum
    - Visit RCR
    - ???
  • Flight back on 6th
Any thoughts?

Looking forward to meet some of you guys.....
"Main Street" off the circle that the speedway is on has several good restaurants, a cool indoor Karting facility, the Dallara "factory and museum" as well as the "A.J. Foyt wine vault" (honestly, who would have though A.J. was a wine guy?". Enjoy!

If you are in Indy, and like a good steak, try St Elmos. I believe it is the oldest steakhouse in Indiana. Excellent steak and even better service.

Regards Brian
Actually "St. Elmo", no "s'. And they are famous for the shrimp cocktail, some serous horseradish in it. Classis steakhouse, waiter with white aprons and excellent aged beef.

As per usual Rick is correct. No “S” in their name. When a group of us go there, we add in the “S” out of habit. I never liked their shrimp cocktail, but many do. I displayed at the PRI , and IMIS shows in Indy for many years and always made sure we eat there.

Has anybody been to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio?
How much time is needed to see it - from their website it seem you could spent the entire day?

On our way from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis its located on along the way - the ride takes approx. 6 hours (Pittsburgh to Indy) > question is if we can do the ride and the museum in one day - it might be too much....?

What is your opinion?

Yes, you really need a full day. I have been once and only had two hours, I basically ran through the museum. Hope to get back this year with at least a day to view it.

Hello Folks,

Finally we are back in Germany and I found the time to sort out my pictures and want to give you some feedback on how our trip went.

First of all I would like to thank the following people:
- Everyone who replied to this thread and answered my questions.
- Certainly Rick Muck, his wife and his team who put the reunion together.
- All the people from the forum here that I got to meet in person during the event / reunion dinner like Chris Kuoba, Don, Tom (Cobrajet), Chris (KurbmeisterKlotz), Randy Folsom, Alan, Howard and a few more whose names I can't remember (sorry).
- Especially all the people who were at the Saturday dinner at the Firebirds Wood Fired Grill - I really enjoyed our conversations.
- All the vendors like Downforce, Hillbanks, Safir, Fran Kress, etc. who were there and presented their cars, parts, etc.
- Dennis Olthoff and team (he built my car in 2008) and also Merlin Pogson and his wife Cheryl who now represent https://legendary-racecars.com/.
- Fran Hall which took the time to give me a company tour (unreal).
- Also the team at PittRace who run the PVGP Historics.

As there is a lot of stuff to post I have to make several posts after this one.

Stay tuned,
Markus

Our Ride
P1000785.JPG

To go for a Pick-Up was a good decision - rental cost was low, fuel consumption not too bad (need to do the math for our 2100 miles)
BTW fuel is dirt cheap compared to Europe - like half the price.

It was very spacy - it would even be OK for 3 people to travel

We even had a fridge

Markus, Thank you for your comments on the event. We worked hard to make is at best as it could be, but it could have been better. We were honored to have you come so far to attend and to participate in the Reunion. Hope to see you again but not likely at an event I am running!

Markus,

It was a pleasure meeting you as well as talking with you and my wife. Glad you had a great trip and got to see some places I’ll put on my tour list next time I’m in that part of the country again.

The next stop was the main reason for the trip. Here are a few pics from the PVGP Historics and the anniversary - I will post some more pics in Rick's thread later.
We had planned to stop by on Thursday to get a feel for the place, but ended up spending the whole day at PittRace.
In the end we spent 4 days and had a great time, saw a lot of nice cars, some good track action and also met a lot of "crazy" people.
