Rear Brake Cooling Ducts

I know the side scoop was used to furnish air to the rear brakes and also to the engine. Did they (originals) use flexible duct hose routed towards the engine? And pics?

The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to replicate the originals as much as I can.

Thanks

I thought I had some pics for you, but they are either in some remote location on the computer, or deleted. As I remember on the 66 roadcar they were moulded into the clip and the branch that went to the motor just aimed at the motor. The rear caliper cooler then was hooked up with ducting. do a search for 66 road car in the originals section. Might be in there?? If my friend knew how to take some digital pics, I would get some for you. Won't be back up to his place til mid Feb. to help with his tach install.

Bill,
from what I have seen the air ducting just dumped into the engine compartment near the rear brakes. No ducting. The MK2 was the first to duct the backs which was much like the MK4. I am sure you will find a car around that some team decided to put ducting into. They all did their own thing. Shelby and HM cars were completely different when it came to stuff like this. Remember, these were the guys that thought cold air was breaking rotors so they decided to warm the air into the front ducting. Also, most of the braking is done with front brakes.

Hi Bill,

Here are a few pictures of front and rear brake ducts from original cars. No two are alike. The one I like best has a structure from the side scoops on the rear clip that directs air into a separate detaching short hood over the rotors. I do not have the other half of that picture but maybe the ones from Chris are similar. Your posts are great and I look forward to seeing how you work this detail into your car.

Thanks guys. I'm going to use these, plus one I found (1049P) to design and fabricate something.

Stay tuned...

Bill, I make those ducts if you want them. The rear duct isn't too bad to install after the rear inner body panels are made, but I don't think you could fit or "snake" in the front ducts without cutting out the panel located right behind the headlights and the inner panel that runs front to the back. I also make the 90 degree duct that is located on the lower half of the side sir duct. You can see how it looks on the D&D post.
I also make the ducts that go to the small front NACA ducts.
Email me at MSN.com if you want to order the ducts.
Your build is looking great.... getting close!

Using the great photos supplied by you guys, I made a mockup in carboard last night of a plenum used on 1049P. It's rough, but I think it will work. Next, I'll make one in aluminum with some changes.

Here is 1049P

And here is my prototype

I sent an email to FFRGuy to get the rear brake cooling ducts he mentioned.

Using the supplied pictures (thanks again), I've designed and will soon fabricate a bracket for the front brakes.

Cheers

Bill,
I spoke with you about a year ago about making me a set of these ducts and I'm still waiting for you you to let me know "when you do the next batch".

I found a company in Minnesota called Spiral Manufacturing that specializes in HVAC ducting. They will custom make HVAC parts to the customer's specs. So I gave them the dimensions of the plenum and they are currently making me two pices (no minimum). They should be ready in about 2 weeks.

I am also making brackets for the front and rear uprights to attach the 3" duct hose to. Although they won't be "exactly" like an original, they will still be close, which is my prime goal.

Cheers
