NASA Eastern States Championships

Dan Raver drove his Superlite SLC to a near win in the NASA Eastern States Championships this weekend. Taking the lead in lap 6 from a fourth-place start, Raver led the rest of the race until the last lap when an ill-timed caution allowed his 8-second lead to evaporate. At the restart, the second-place Radical SR8 made a diving pass into turn one and the SLC wasn't able to retake the lead before the race ended, and so finished in second place.

So congratulations to Dan Raver, Agile Motorsports, Superlite Cars and the rest of the team for a great showing with a new car!

Raver also ran a 1:52 in the process, a very fast time at VIR, and just a half-second off the lap record for Super Unlimited.

In qualifying, von Moltke posted the session's quick time halfway through the 15-minute session and then locked it down for good with an even faster Lap 6 time of 1:49.255 (107.748 mph). The No. 48's top time was enough to edge Patrick Lindsey's Porsche by just .010 of a second.

I think the Raver/Agile SLC could beat the GTD times.

If you look at the picture, it looks like they are actually running Hoosier DOT tires. Real race slicks are probably worth a few seconds, and remember that this is the first year they have been running the car, so there is likely plenty of development still in the car (and possibly the driver?). For example, there is downforce to be gained in the front by adopting all the latest CFD-derived mods that the 01 car had at the end of its career.

Finally, if you watched the early videos of the SLC chasing the Crawford Daytona Prototype, it was obvious that the SLC was faster under braking and in the turns- only on the straights was the DP car faster. That bodes well for simply adding more power to the SLC.

All in all, I think it was a remarkable achievement, and, I hope, a portent of things to come.

Perhaps "retired" is too strong a word, but the 01 isn't being actively raced.

It's expensive to campaign a car, and really, the point has been proven that the SLC is a formidable race car given even a moderate level of power.

I suppose if circumstances were different, it might race again. But it has a pretty special history as it is right now.
