Inner tubes

Be aware - If you decide to run tubes inside your tires, you will need to dump a LOT of talcum powder or some other slip agent inside the tire carcass to keep the heat down. Else the tube will quite literally vulcanize itself to the inside of the tire..

I am not sure why they would. The Pantera has magnesium wheels and nobody uses tubes on them provided they have been properly prepared, primed, and painted on the inside. I have never seen a race 40 at the track in modern times using tubes. All the AVON race slicks are mounted without tubes. If they did, it was because of bias ply tires that would not hold air.

Memories…
The porosity of the wheels is easily overcome with proper preparation as others have said. The porosity of the tires, however, not so much. Back in the 60’s and 70’s we used to “paint” the entire inside surfaces of the race tires themselves with Ivory Liquid Dish Soap. This slowed the leaking of air to the point where we only had to add a little to no air between heat races.
It was rather telling who had soaped their tires during a rainy day when the tires would leave a trail of suds and foam while sitting in the paddock. To my recollection, none of the scrutineers had anything negative to say about the practice - although I suppose we might have marginally contributed to a slippery race track.

The Borrani wire wheels of that period were not sealed for tubeless tires. In 1962 when Ford offered Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels on the Thunderbird (standard on the Sports Roadster) they had specially prepared Firestone tires for them. The normally "tubeless" tires had numerous micro holes punched in the sidewall to allow the tube to inflate without trapping air between the tire and tube.

The Dayton wires sold now have a sealant over the ends of the spokes to allow tubeless tires to be used. The Borrani's can be sealed for tubeless use.
