Diesel engine options?

I had to weigh in. I come from the computer industry, and I keep telling folks before you buy a computer, what are you going to do with it. gamers need/want high perf everything, while 'netters need fast 'net access.
If you are wanting a GT40 then a high performance engine with the right sound is necessary. As nice a 4 rotor turbo making 1000hp is, it would not seem "right" in a classic car like '40. Same with a diesel. Now a Radical SR8 or a Stohr WF1(which look just like the Audi R10) may be okay for the diesel as you are attempting to follow the model. Eventhough we have choices in building a vehicle, I can't see spending $50k to $100k or more to make a classic and then "b*stardize" it with an unusual powertrain. The car itself get you the attention. Also surf the net for *ugly* cars you will then get the picture of what many feel a diesel would do for the GT40.

Oh yeah. Check out the farmer channel for tractor racing, diesels can definitely make power. Just my 2 coins

How about a low performance SBF V8. A newly rebuilt 289 @ 180HP with a good highway gear like a R21 Renault should get 30MPG @ 60MPH. Maybe even a lot better. And it will still sound good with a set of headers.

Good point, I think you're correct. 289 (or even a 260), some small hi-torque heads, small cam, tiny 4bbl or 2bbl and I bet you'd have some serious fuel mileage out of an appropriately geared car. And have as much torque/power as the diesel (or reasonably close) without all the trouble and difficulty of setting it up for a diesel.

A 289 with a small cam & hi-torque heads and a 500CFM carb should get more than 25MPG in the 40. Great idea. maybe 200hp & all the torque needed with the R21.

We are about to do a car for a customer using an Audi V8 TDI engine. Thats the engine that was in the car that Top Gear drove from London to Scotland and back again on a single tank of fuel.

The engine is very compact and there is a choice of Audi Transaxles that will bolt straight on the back.

I am more than a little interested in this project as one of my road cars is an Audi RS6 and I have always toyed with the idea of using an RS6 engine in a TS40.

Thanks

Andy

I hope you post pics and let us know how it's going...

Hi Guys .....Can I add my 2cents worth to this Diesel vs Petrol vs LPG thread, first let me say that anything other than a American V8 in a gt 40 is sacralidge but that said I have run all 3 of these options in my 4x4 challenge truck, and the results are Interesting first was a stock 4.2 Nissan diesel (Gutless but when forever) we swapped it out for a 383 chev running twin Impco 425 mixers on 750 throttle plates, the thing made 385kw (500hp) at the wheels and did 3km to the litre if you didn't drive it to hard on the road, Off road you don't want to Know!!! but it still had more power and better economy than on petrol as we had to run on race fuel as it was 12:1 compression. Then we sold that truck and went back to the Diesel this time running a TO4 turbo and intercooler runing 12 psi boost. I'm not going to say it had the same performance as the Chevy but 2 of my mates run V8s in the same trucks 1 is a 5.7 LS1 the other a 5.0 L Holden. And niether of those trucks can get away from me in a drag race and after a days 4x4 I have a lot more fuel in the tank. We were looking at compound turbo setup and run 35psi boost, the performance goes up in spade loads but so does the ever present BLACK SMOKE. so lets think what that looks like coming out the back of an exotic classic GT40. I rest my case. cheers Leon.

Power crazy Administrators,:):) Dont be so Hasty, Imagine how much less stressful life for Richard H would have been with a Diesel----------No Plugs, No Carb, No Distributor-or Cap Or Gear, or any of the 101 other things that could have been wrong with it!

Why would you want a forty that sounds like a taxi?
G’day Mike,
Have you ever heard a GM 653 scream at full noise? :D

I drove a Kenworth S2 about eighteen years ago with one of these engines fitted and the sound was intoxicating. Sometimes you’d rev it just for the rush it’d give you. Every time you took off it sounded like a top fuel dragster.

You’d probably have a better chace of brokering a peace deal on the West Bank than fitting one of these in a 40, however, I wouldn’t complain about the noise from one.

I’ve found a few clips to give you an idea. Just set the volume up to loud.
