This misconception keeps going on, an assault rifle is semi auto, 3 shot burst or full auto with a selector switch. You need a Federal weapons permit to own this type of weapon, they don't just give them out. The AR15 "look" rifles sold to the public are semi auto, the same as your friends Ruger, one shot at a time. How many shooters have been NRA members? None. The shooters all do share one trait, mental illness. There are over 300 million guns in the US. If we stopped gun violence in the most gun controlled areas, L.A., Washington DC, New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Detroit, and others we would be near the bottom of the gun violence list worldwide. We should have extremely harsh penalties for gun sales and gun use in the cities I listed. And if we back out suicides it would be even smaller. If someone wants to end their life, they are going to do it, gun, or not.

I don't think there's any misconceptions about semi-auto "assault" style weapons Al, but your point regarding the geography is interesting. A relatively proficient shooter can shoot off a single shot AR15 at a similar rate to a full auto Bren Gun, and there are plenty of examples on YouTube demonstrating this.

Then there's this scary thing, which is totally legal as far as I am aware.

The Bump Stock which rather makes a cock of all the "assault rifle" restrictions such as they are. Someone can always overcome an "engineered" solution and this is clever.

Check this bad boy out..

What is a Bump Stock? Should it be illegal?! - YouTube

You can not buy full auto parts without a Federal Firearms License, you can not possess a full auto without the FFL. It is a felony. The bump stock should be on the same license. I have never seen full auto parts for sale without an FFL. It's not easy to get an FFL, people that have them treat them with respect, it's too easy to lose it. We are not addressing the problem, it's mentally ill people, gangs, criminals, and terrorist that kill in this country. They should be in a data base.

The left doesn't want ID for the most important act an American can do, vote. What possible, plausible reason can there be for voting without identification. You need ID for every other important thing you do. There's only one reason I can see for voting without ID, fraud. The excuse is poverty, poor people don't have a problem applying for food stamps or welfare, a voter ID is much easier and requires the same proof. They should be issued an ID when applying for the those services.

Al, the availability of "retrofit kits" to turn AR15 assault "STYLE" rifles into automatic rifles has been well documented for a long time.
We can't do that if our POTUS will not even acknowledge that he has been asked a question about gun control ("Thank you very much, thank you very much" is not an acknowledgement, IMHO). We must get rid of him, or every person who supports him should be ashamed of themselves the next time a shooter kills kids in a school. Sure, Trump the Coward may be a very good businessman, but in the opinion of the majority of the voting age population in our country he's a terrible president. He's gotta go, plain and simple.

Doug

Doug, you're wrong. It is illegal to convert a semi auto rifle to full auto. If you have documents as to where such conversions kits purport to be available, immediately report them to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
Besides, any of the AR15s being sold these days won't accept the parts for a military "assault rifle" version making them fully automatic. The receiver won't accept those parts. The way civilian AR's are purposely designed, they don't have the space for the full auto sear cut out of the lower receiver.

Bump stocks only allow someone to fire them semi-automatically faster with less recoil shock. The weapon's operation cycle remains the same. They also make the weapon more prone to jam and their operations makes the weapon highly inaccurate. Personally, I'd like to see them banned but that's up to the legislative branch.

If the current crop prominent Democrats are the choices in the next presidential election, you may be disappointed. Maxine Waters??? Elizabeth Warren???? Kamala Harris??? Cory Booker??? Michelle Obama??? Oprah??? Yikes!

Interesting point Al. It goes without saying that the stark contradiction of 18-20 year olds being too immature/irresponsible, to buy a beer or as Rod suggested even join the military because "kids are immature and do stupid things" yet they are sought after for their votes with the likes of Bernie Sanders promising "free tuition for all public four year colleges".

I know you’re not naive enough to believe that there are no parties here in the USA who violate the law and sell retrofit kits to those who want to make semi-automatic weapons work in a fully automatic manner and do not have the required license, Al. It may be illegal to do so, but with Trump the Coward so afraid that he would look bad if he enforced those laws, what do they have to lose? There is no enforcement because he’s too busy claiming there was no collusion with the Russians to care about unimportant things like protecting our children from school shooters.

I would support the requirement for voters to have ID, Al. Here in KS one has to present a valid photo ID to be allowed to vote. This is then compared to the voting rolls to make sure the person with the photo ID is registered to vote. In this sparsely populated area everyone who has lived here for any time at all knows almost everyone else. I have no qualms at all about requiring voter registration as long as the cost of obtaining the required ID is not so high that the aspiring voter cannot afford it. At our county treasurers office, where we buy license plates and pay property taxes, the clerks ALWAYS ask if the party they are serving wants to register to vote. There are no overzealous challenges from some political party watchdog, no challenges to the voter’s registration, no denials if property taxes are not paid.
I am constantly amazed at the number of people who choose not to vote.

Doug, let me ask you this, how many shootings were done with full auto assault weapons? I believe the answer is none. Yet that is the biggest worry of the left. The terrorist have done unbelievable damage with vehicles.

IIRC the Vegas shooter used a bumpstock, creating essentially a weapon that functioned as fully automatic.

Right?

...and do you really believe Cruz would not have used a fully automatic if he could have gotten one?

Knowing how much guns cost, it’s hard for me to believe that a teenager could afford one on what he could earn in a discount store.

What you don’t seem to understand is that the bar to become president is soooo low at this point, they only have to be better than our illegitimate president.

Those are all smart people who can actually carry out the oath of office (e.g., defend our country against attacks) and not cheat on their 3rd marriage with a porn star and playboy playmate.

Speaking of defending constitution, if the democrats win the House back in 2018, then get ready for impeachment, since our illegitimate president hasn’t responded to the Russian cyber attack on our country. Can you say “dereliction of duty”? And the Senate will convict him. Fasten your seatbelts, guys and gals.

Free tuition for public 4-year colleges is not bad thing. Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, etc. offer free college tuition. And even New York, if your family earns less than $100,000. Pretty awesome deal considering college can be $250,000 +/-.

New York offers free college tuition. So do these European countries - Apr. 10, 2017

I’d be in favor of raising the age to drink, smoke, vape, for gun ownership, military, etc. With the advent of drones and pilotless planes, “boots on the ground” isn’t as crucial as it used to be. Kids are too young and immature.

I tend to agree, Rod...I think the Repubs are becoming more and more disillusioned with this vengeful joke of a POTUS, but with his affection for revenge they are afraid to cross him...now. Given an opportunity to vote in an impeachment trial I truly believe the Senate Repubs would sieze the opportunity to rid themselves of this coward of a POTUS and vote in unison to convict.

Trump prides himself on being smart and takes every opportunity to tell us how smart he is. If that is so, I can’t imagine how he cannot see the writing on the wall. Maybe he can and is just riding the gravy train as long as it will last.

He’s not making America great again, he’s making America the laughing stock of the civilized nations. I actually believe he is right now engaging in collusion with the Russians, otherwise he would impose the sanctions on Russia that congress authorized.

He’s gotta go, plain and simple...he’s just gotta go!!

Just within the last week:

13 indictments of Russian Nationals, Rick Gates will plea guilty and testify against Mnafort, Rob Porter (wife beater), John Kelly allowing the wife beater in the White House, porn stars and the $130,000 payment by our illegitimate president’s attorney, security clearance problems and two Cabinet secretaries flying first class all over the world.

Phew, aren’t we all tired yet? Time to get him out.

And if Sean Hannity were here, then he’d say “Clinton emails, Benghazi, Uranium One.” We have a Republican President, Republican Senate and House, and no one gives a poop.

Yep, I pretty much agree with this guy from The NY Times:

“That is, either Trump’s real estate empire has taken large amounts of money from shady oligarchs linked to the Kremlin — so much that they literally own him; or rumors are true that he engaged in sexual misbehavior while he was in Moscow running the Miss Universe contest, which Russian intelligence has on tape and he doesn’t want released; or Trump actually believes Russian President Vladimir Putin when he says he is innocent of intervening in our elections — over the explicit findings of Trump’s own C.I.A., N.S.A. and F.B.I. chiefs.“

Whatever Trump Is Hiding Is Hurting All of Us Now - The New York Times

“President Trump is either totally compromised by the Russians or is a towering fool, or both, but either way he has shown himself unwilling or unable to defend America against a Russian campaign to divide and undermine our democracy.”

He would have used a tank if he could have gotten one, you are "what if-ing". He didn't have a full auto and the others didn't. The bump stock should be licensed.

How about raising the age to vote??

I also assume you've never been in the military.

The bump stock should be banned, Al!

It should be illegal for any use other than law enforcement or military...neither of which need bumpstocks, as they have access to automatic weapons already.

It has no civilian use other than to make an already incredibly lethal weapon exponentially more lethal.

Cheers!

Back to voter ID. An ID is needed to get into a Presidential convention, but not to vote in some states. So, they don't want someone sneaking into a convention and putting their lives at risk, but vote without ID early and often!
