Wilwood brakes needed

Hi all

I am starting to look at the brakes for my Tornado. I've opted for a bias adjustable brake setup and wondered what brake options I have? Tornado offer a Wilwood 4 pot performance brake kit which I like the look of at £1750. Does anyone know what model these are and are there any alternative wilwood packages available to fit a Tornado?

Finally I am getting all of my parts from Tornado but as the brakes are made by a third party company does anyone know of any cheaper suppliers of Wilwood brakes here in the UK?

Thanks

Our brake packages include all of the brackets to attach the calipers to the uprights.

These parts are not available from anywhere else.

Thanks

Sorry Andy, I didn't realise I thought the brakes were a standard kit. I am trying to save a few quid here and there where I can as money is a little tight at the moment so every penny I can save on parts etc helps keep the project moving.

Do you ever just sell the brackets etc seperate from the brake kit?

Trevor,

I went through this exercise last year with my Tornado and sourced directly with Wilwood here in USA. I opted for Wilwood 6 pot caliper and matching rotor (front ony). I am most satified with the results. They fit within my 15" Halibrand style wheel with room to spare, albeit not much. Give me a day or two and I can pull the file for part numbers, prices ect.

Like Andy mentions, a caliper bracket is necessary. No big deal, I had my fabricator make one.

Trev,
I stock Wilwoods and also fit six piston front and four piston rears under a 15 inch wheel package...we use a 11.75 rotors that are 1 .25 thick....let me know if we can help.

As Fran says, this is a pretty common brake package, 6 pot fronts / 4 pot rears, but do not forget to change the pedal assembly at the same time, Frank

The picture shows Powerlite handbrake calipers for the rear. This is highly unadvised by Wilwood and Rally Design themselves! The catalogue states they are not suitable for cars over 750 kg's.

By the looks of things the front calipers are Midilites, if so the brackets for the front exist in stock, also the rear brackets should be in stock as well depending on disc size which i'd need to check.

Trevor,
I have APs on the front and Wilwoods on the rear. If you are going to try to are if the handbrake caliper, Andy has stated before on the forum that his cars have got through the test. I bought mine at a kit show and got a discount and then got Brian Mage to make the adaptor, using a standard Granada vented disc. There is an article in the club magazine a few years ago I wrote about it.

Thanks guys, trying to get my head around the brakes as it's again something completely new to me.

I was thinking of going for 4pots all round as I was worried about the clearance over the small 15" wheels I am having. I am going for the BRM 6 spokes not halibrands (don't know if this makes any difference).

So will 6pots at the front fit and are 6pots at the front generally regarded as the best option?

Finally, Frank can you explain what you mean by changing the pedal assembly? I have already bought and fitted the Tornado Bias adjustable pedal assembly.

Thanks

Trev

I dont think the BRM 6 spokes will be any different from the Halibrand. I too am going for the 15 inch BRM.

As Andy said, all his packages come with all the brackets and fixings. He has already done all the development work for you and its a bolt on and forget package. Thats why its £1750 + Vat.

However its a fairly well trodden path, but you will have to make up some spacers and brackets to fit it all together. This is the development work that Andy has already done for you in his package.

A typical Powerlite Handbrake kit retail from Rally Design is £354.50 + pads (approx. £25-£50). That includes calipers, discs, mounting brackets, nuts/bolts and development costs etc.

Thanks for the input so far, keep it coming.

Also I am just about to order my suspension and steering items from Tornado so I can get cracking on assembling everything before I get the brakes. Is there anything extra I should be considering with either steering or suspension that will effect my brake choices?

The aluminium uprights they sell are lovely little items, but, the manufacture of them is really uneasy about them being used on GT40's says they are just not upto the job.

I'd love some feedback on them as they are super cheap (£195 retail) and i wanted to use them myself, but with reports of them breaking on 7's running with big brakes and the older style welded steering arms also breaking i've been very concerned about taking the plunge and going for them. Be great to know that someone has used them in earnest without issue.

I couldn't comment on the suitability of the uprights but as far as I am aware Tornado now provide the aluminium front uprights as standard so I would assume there are no issues with them. I am sure Andy can tell you a bit more about them.

...the older style welded steering arms also breaking ...

Very important and something that should be taken seriously. Maybe Andy could shed some light on this.
