What is it ?

While doing some research on the "J" cars I came upon this picture showing J6 right side with what looks like a light just in front of the rear tire. I've circled it in red.
Can someone help me understand what this was for, pit light? It appears it only was used on the Le Mans race cars because looking at old photos of Sebring I don't see it. Was it used on all 1967 J5 thru J8 cars raced at Le Mans? I think I have seen photos of other GT40 race cars with this located behind the rear tire.

Picture would be helpful. Number light was pretty standard for night races, but are you saying further back yet?

I know that the MKIV in 1967 race used phosphate to illuminate the meatball numbers at night is this light anything to do with this? They also carried ID lights on the drivers side of the windscreen. Green for Number 1 the winner and Orange for number 2 fourth place.

There was a small light on the side that illuminate the race number, you may see them on photos, its a small round body about 40mm of diameter htat project light on side.
Now the car are using a transparent number and light is coming from the inside of the car.

First to did that was the Matra team in 1972

I read somewhere in the distant past that as the teams started using exotic materials like magnesium and other alloys along with glass fibre with various gels that the ACO came up with a set of colours that were required to be painted on the panels so in case of incident the fire marshals had some chance of using the correct extinguisher.

Could what you are looking at be a circle sticker/paint to identify it?
