Bonneville should be on any automobile enthusiast's "bucket list". This year it will be held from the 3rd of August to the 9th. Many spectators fly in to Salt Lake City and rent a car to drive to Wendover. The key to success here is to NOT wear a car-themed Tee shirt and tell the agent that you are going to the gambling casinos. Of course, wash all the salt off the rental car before turning it in.
It is helpful to attend the Drivers' Meeting early Saturday morning: it is open to the public and it will help a first-time visitor understand the race course and the procedures at this unique venue. In addition, after the close of that meeting, you can drive your car down the salt (55MPH) and see what it might be like at speeds of 200, 300, or 400 mph.
By all means, purchase a pit pass for a few dollars. This will allow you to wander up & down the pits (for almost a mile!) and get a close look at the cars and talk to the mechanics & drivers. You might even be asked to help! Racers are friendly at Bonneville- they are racing for the fun of it. There are no big money prizes or TV contracts, all you get for your effort is a timing slip with your timed speed. This is not professional racing, it is one of the few places where amateurs can compete on a level playing field. If anyone attends Speed Week, please post a trip report.
