G50/52 starter options

I haven’t installed the starter until this weekend. I had to pull the engine and trans to fit a couple things and install the clutch. While it was out I put in the starter and was happy it turned the engine over quickly in the correct direction.

I then found out while going back in that the solenoid hits the mounting bracket for the lower right wishbone.
I see others have had the same issue, but the starters they had were a lot different from mine and the posts were fairly old.
My question is, what are others running for these transmissions in a RCR-40?

I was told this G50/52 came out of a 91' 911 turbo. Not sure if there are different starters for different year models.

This is what I’m planning on running with my ‘92 g50/52 but it’s not an RCR chassis so probably not overly helpful to you. Looks like it’s the same starter just not Bosch.

As I understand it now, RCR has (or had) starters that could be re-clocked..

I have this in my build site (widebody RCR40), but the HI Torque pn is IMI-101NL. Factory starters are not going to fit inside the RCR horseshoe.

I did read about how you did this, very good design in my opinion. I think I could do it with a stock starter. Just curious what other options there are.

Hi Adam,

I read your build thread on this as well.

I'm curious if your starter (IMI-101NL) actually looks like the picture all the websites have for it.

Mine has a very long pinion that fits into a bushing on the bell housing. Im thinking that starter might not work for me, but I am unsure.

no idea if this piece will work in yours, but space is tight in my chassis and the clocking is crucial. It's a Powerlite starter, but the guts are Nippon Denso heavy duty. I have a g96-97, which is similar to a G50/52

After hours of searching. I might have come up with some options. It seems IMI (HiTorque) has a couple to choose from, I am awaiting confirmation as to fit and availability.

I am also waiting to hear back from RCR and Kennedy.

The IMI-170-002 looks to be correct with the long nose. But I cant find anyone that has them to check pricing.

Pelican has one that should fit this car and it looks pretty close to the imi-170-001 which should work, but they are proud of it.

I finally got a starter that works.

I ordered Hi Torque's 170-001 after talking a bit with Chris from Hi Torque we determined it will fit on my transmission. Unfortunately when I received it, I found it could only be indexed to 4 positions. Those positions didn't help me much. The good news is that it gave me something I could work with.
I changed how the nose cone mounted by counter sinking the original holes that mount the spacer to the starter motor. Then I rotated the nose cone and mounts to a position that worked for me. I drilled and tapped new holes, now it fits and works perfectly.

I still have a very low mileage 1989 Porsche C4 starter in one of my spare parts bins. It was not cheap to buy as I gave more than $200 for it…

I am in the same boat with the brand new starter I have. Hopefully I can sell it for a decent price.

I tested everything yesterday. The new starter works great. I turned it over long enough to build oil pressure.

My goal is to start the engine in the car this summer.
